Hanon Systems Develops World's First 4th Generation Heat Pump System for Electric Vehicles
Hanon Systems, a prominent global supplier in automotive thermal management for electrified mobility, has developed the world’s first 4th generation heat pump system, now commercially available since July. This innovative system is a breakthrough thermal management solution for electric vehicles (EVs).

This 4th generation heat pump system is noteworthy for its parallel heat source recovery method, which captures waste heat from the motor and battery in addition to heat from the external air. This recovered heat is utilized for heating, cooling, and battery temperature management, significantly boosting EV driving range.

The modular heat pump system incorporates multiple new features, including patented and patent-pending technologies, underscoring Hanon Systems' leadership in thermal management. The system integrates the Refrigerant Control Module (RCM) and the Coolant Control Module (CCM) into a unified control unit, enabling comprehensive management of the entire thermal system.

Hanon Systems has continually refined its heat pump system design to improve efficiency and reduce power consumption requirements. The company's efforts have extended EV driving ranges, upholding its status as the world's second-largest thermal management company committed to developing "lightweight" and "high-efficiency" components through continuous innovation.

Since pioneering the mass production of heat pump systems with waste heat recovery in 2015, Hanon Systems has consistently advanced its technology. The second generation, launched in 2018, incorporated battery thermal management functions, becoming the first integrated thermal management system to enhance EV driving range. The third generation, developed in 2021, was applied to EV-dedicated platforms and introduced the 800V electric compressor, significantly reducing EV charging times.

The 4th generation heat pump system was initially implemented in the Kia EV3 in South Korea, with production expansion planned for the U.S. and Europe. This technology advancement results from close collaboration with industry clients, enhancing the driving experience for electric vehicle users.

Additionally, Hanon Systems has introduced the world's first Thin HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) technology. This "reduced" HVAC system decreases the overall system size by approximately 30%, providing more legroom for passengers and ensuring a comfortable driving experience by minimizing the HVAC system area under the cockpit.
