Mitsubishi Electric expands Ecodan R290 heat pump range

Mitsubishi Electric has expanded its Ecodan R290 heat pump lineup with new models designed to meet the heating needs of larger homes and buildings with higher heat loss. The new additions - 8.5 kW, 10 kW, and 12 kW - join the existing 5 kW and 6 kW units launched in October 2023.

The Ecodan R290 heat pump uses propane (R290), a natural refrigerant with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 0.02. All models in the range are manufactured in the UK.

Capable of supplying flow temperatures up to 75 °C (167 °F), the new units are suitable for properties that cannot be extensively insulated. They are also compatible with existing microbore pipework, enabling straightforward retrofitting without major system changes.

The system is designed to operate efficiently in outdoor temperatures as low as -25 °C (-13 °F), making it suitable for year-round use across the UK. Mitsubishi Electric highlights the heat pump’s performance during cold conditions as a key advantage for households seeking reliable low-carbon heating.

Noise reduction is another focus of the updated design. The system has been awarded the Quiet Mark, confirming its low operating sound levels.

The extended R290 range works with all Ecodan hot water cylinders and includes Mitsubishi Electric’s Flow Temperature Controller – 7 and MELCloud connectivity. These features allow remote monitoring and adjustment of heating settings.

Joanna Crown, Product Marketing Manager at Mitsubishi Electric, commented: “The expansion of our Ecodan R290 range reaffirms our commitment to providing cutting-edge, energy-efficient heating solutions for UK households. With the ability to deliver high temperatures and operate efficiently even in extreme cold, these heat pumps offer a practical and sustainable alternative for a wide range of properties. We are excited to bring this extended range to the market and help households transition to low-carbon heating with minimal disruption.”
