Solid Energy launches 170°C heat pump range in UK market

Danish manufacturer Solid Energy has expanded its presence in the UK by introducing a new line of modular ultra-high temperature heat pumps capable of reaching flow temperatures up to 170°C.

The company presented the upgraded hydrocarbon-based range at a launch event hosted by the Danish Embassy in London. Designed for decarbonising industrial process heat, the units target applications such as factories, food processing, and distilleries. The same system can also be configured to provide cooling.

The new models use four different hydrocarbon refrigerants—propane, isobutane, butane, and isopentane—selected based on specific temperature and application requirements. The refrigerants cover a wide temperature range, with isopentane enabling the highest output of 90°C to 170°C.

Each heat pump module ranges from 200kW to 1.2MW, with scalable configurations allowing multiple modules to operate as one system. The semi-hermetic screw compressors are designed for 100,000 hours of operation and housed in sound-reducing cabinets. The units are factory-tested, equipped with refrigerant leak detection, and compliant with UK and EU ATEX safety standards.

Ken Kneale, Business Unit Director UK & Ireland, said: “Every Solid Energy heat pump is designed to the specific needs of individual projects. Using our advanced performance calculator, we can select the appropriate compressor size. Depending on the operating temperature we then select the hydrocarbon refrigerants to be used.”

Also unveiled was a new configuration, the XL4, which features four compressors per module to deliver high output within a compact footprint. Solid Energy is currently applying the XL4 in a 70MW project in Denmark.

“The XL4 offers the same high efficiencies as our one cabinet, one compressor modular units with the benefits of needing less space and greatly reduced installation costs,” Kneale added.

Solid Energy is partnering with Pure Renewables Commercial for UK operations, covering technical sales, installation, commissioning, and after-sales support.
