Thermo King expands electric and AI-driven refrigeration solutions

Thermo King, a brand of Trane Technologies and a leader in transport temperature control solutions, has introduced a new range of advanced refrigeration technologies designed to support customers in transitioning toward cleaner and more adaptable refrigerated transport.

The company is presenting a comprehensive lineup that includes fully electric, hybrid, and power-agnostic systems. These solutions reflect Thermo King’s progress in decarbonising refrigerated transport and urban logistics, while enabling fleet operators to meet current operational demands and long-term sustainability targets.

Among the new technologies is an AI-driven tool called Ask TracKing, developed to simplify data analysis for fleet managers. This digital innovation uses telematics to provide intuitive dashboards with actionable insights for improving efficiency, performance, and predictive maintenance.

Thermo King has also unveiled a concept for a fully electric trailer refrigeration unit. The power-agnostic design draws energy from multiple sources, including AxlePower-regenerated electricity, tractor batteries, solar panels, depot chargers, and auxiliary battery packs. Integrated AI optimises energy use and system uptime, while the compact unit features a low-GWP refrigerant and transparent life cycle reporting.

Another key highlight is the E-Volution electric truck refrigeration platform, now entering serial production. Designed for trucks between 7.5 and 26 tonnes, the units offer slim design, reduced maintenance, and integrated telematics. They are compatible with both battery electric vehicles (BEV) and internal combustion engine (ICE) trucks. A third-party Life Cycle Assessment confirms their sustainability credentials.

Thermo King’s E-Series units for vans and light commercial vehicles are also part of the portfolio. These compact systems support last-mile delivery with zero-direct emissions, up to 20% lower energy consumption, and enhanced heating capacity. Smart controls and built-in telematics ensure efficient performance in low-emission urban zones.

Hybrid and energy-recovery technologies remain a focus as well. The Advancer AxlePower system, now widely used across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, enables self-charging trailer refrigeration with minimal fuel impact. Available for purchase or flexible rental, the system is supported by tools like the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) calculator to help customers plan CO₂ and cost reductions.

Thermo King has also introduced fuel-saving updates to conventional systems. Truck and trailer units are now certified for use with B100 and HVO biofuels without affecting maintenance or warranty. A new ECOmode in the Advancer trailer unit reduces fuel consumption by up to 50% compared to continuous operation.

“Rather than enforcing a one-size-fits-all transition, we want to help customers begin their journey by strategically replacing legacy products with new, best-fit technologies,” said Claudio Zanframundo, President of Thermo King EMEA Truck, Trailer, Bus and Global Marine, Rail, Air.
