Trane expands GVAF chiller range for data centers

Trane has introduced new high-capacity models in its Sintesis eXcellent GVAF air-cooled chiller platform, expanding the range for industrial and data center applications. The company said capacities now reach up to 2.5 MW (approx. 8.53 million BTU/h), while the operating map has been widened to 54°C ambient (approx. 129°F).

The new GVAF 505 and GVAF 550 models extend the upper end of the range and are designed for high-density applications. Trane said the units were engineered to provide strengthened full-load performance, high-capacity free cooling and rapid restart capability for facilities where uptime and stability are critical.

According to the company, all models are optimised for ultra-low-GWP R1234ze. Optional CORE condensers are available to increase heat rejection effectiveness, capacity per square metre and full-load performance. Trane said the changes can support stronger efficiency at higher ambient temperatures, more free-cooling hours during the year and more site layout options through higher capacity in a compact footprint.

All Sintesis eXcellent GVAF units are manufactured and tested at Trane Technologies’ plant in France. The test centre includes a 5,000 m3 climate chamber (approx. 176,600 ft3) that can simulate ambient conditions from -25°C to +55°C (approx. -13°F to 131°F) with temperature and humidity control. The facility is used to validate full-scale free-cooling chillers and heat pumps across operating modes and customer-specific performance requirements.

“At Trane, we are designing the future of data center cooling. These facilities rely on systems that deliver certainty — certainty of uptime, certainty of efficiency, and certainty of long term performance,” said Lauri Salmia, Applied Portfolio Manager at Trane. He added that the upgraded GVAF platform offers higher capacities, a wider operating map and project-specific solutions delivered at scale.
