Carrier Transicold Celebrates 25 Years of E-Drive Technology

Carrier Transicold showcased its latest electric and connected refrigeration solutions at IAA Transportation 2024 in Hanover, Germany, marking 25 years of its pioneering all-electric E-Drive technology. Since its launch, nearly 300,000 units have been sold, solidifying the company's position as a leader in the field.

“We’re proud to celebrate 25 years of innovation with our E-Drive technology,” said Victor Calvo, Vice President & General Manager, International Truck & Trailer, Carrier Transicold. “This technology has revolutionized refrigerated transport and continues to set new standards in performance and energy efficiency. Thanks to our E-Drive architecture, Carrier Transicold is exceptionally well-positioned to lead the transition towards full electrification, showcasing a comprehensive and forward-thinking approach.”

Legacy of E-Drive Technology

E-Drive technology began its journey in 1999 with the Vector 1800 refrigeration unit, using a semi-hermetic compressor to eliminate the mechanical transmissions of belt-driven refrigeration systems. This innovation converted motor energy into electricity, offering high temperature accuracy, reducing refrigerant leakage rates by up to 50%, eliminating many parts to reduce maintenance time, and cutting fuel consumption.

In 2010, Carrier Transicold introduced enhanced E-Drive technology in the Vector 1550s. This iteration featured a fully hermetic scroll compressor, improving refrigeration efficiency, reducing noise, and lowering CO2 emissions.

In 2018, the High Efficiency range debuted with the Vector HE 19, incorporating a refined refrigeration system and a new evaporator air management system. This advancement further reduced power consumption and noise levels, enhancing cold chain performance.

Latest Innovations

Carrier Transicold continues to push innovation with the third generation of E-Drive architecture, featuring advanced inverter technology to modify compressor speed based on real-time temperature requirements. The new Vector HE 17 offers best-in-class total cost of ownership, over 16 kW of cooling capacity, a 30% reduction in fuel consumption, and a 6 dB reduction in noise emissions, equating to a 50% decrease in perceived sound compared to the Vector 1550.

Carrier Transicold has announced the commercial launch of a new version of its Vector HE 19 unit. This cutting-edge refrigeration solution for semi-trailers features a new refrigerant with low global warming potential (GWP) and compatibility with hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO) biofuel or B100 biofuel, aimed at significantly reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions while maintaining exceptional performance.

The Vector HE 19 employs a low-GWP refrigerant, reducing CO2 emissions by 9 times compared to the standard R452A refrigerant. Additionally, the unit is compatible with HVO biofuel, which can cut carbon emissions by 80% compared to a regular diesel-powered unit. When used together, these technologies achieve a minimum total reduction of 84% in CO2 emissions over a one-year period, marking a significant advancement in sustainable refrigeration solutions.

Limited Edition Release

At IAA, Carrier Transicold unveiled a limited edition of the high-performance Vector HE 17. Only 25 numbered units with a unique design were made available for purchase exclusively during the show. This limited edition model allows companies to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability and innovation.

Carrier Transicold continues to lead the industry with its innovative, sustainable, and efficient refrigeration solutions, marking a significant milestone with the celebration of 25 years of E-Drive technology.
