On March 14, 2023, Cool Up and the Integrated Development Group (IDG) organized a pivotal training session in Cairo, focused on establishing a National Cooling Action Plan (NCAP) for Egypt. Conducted in collaboration with the National Ozone Unit (NOU) of the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (EEAA), the session aimed to unite policy stakeholders, including ministry representatives and experts, to promote sustainable cooling and environmentally friendly refrigerants.
The meeting highlighted the importance of a National Cooling Action Plan to advance Egypt's sustainable cooling practices. Presentations by Dr. Ezzat Lewis from the EEAA and Cool Up covered Egypt's current standing, best practices, and potential hurdles for NCAP. Key discussions, moderated by Dr. Ezzat Lewis, Dr. Omar Abdel‐Aziz, and Prof. Hesham Safwat, focused on enhancing energy efficiency standards, establishing a Monitoring, Verification, and Enforcement (MVE) mechanism, and developing financial mechanisms for sustainable cooling.
The event drew 40 participants, including notable figures like Soha Taher, Tarek Shalaby, Baher Elshaarawy, and Omar Elbadawy, as well as representatives from international organizations such as JICA, EOS, UNIDO, and academia.
The session underscored the necessity of aligning with international agreements like the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol and the Paris Agreement, spotlighting a coordinated national strategy to propel Egypt towards sustainable cooling solutions.
