The Green Room Air Conditioning (GRACE) project has handed over 80 split air conditioning units using propane (R290) to Grenada’s Ministry of Climate Resilience, the Environment & Renewable Energy. Permanent Secretary Peron Johnson received the units.
Fifty units will remain in Grenada for installation in public facilities, including training institutions, secondary schools, IT and computer laboratories, health centres, public buildings and selected facilities in Carriacou. The installations are intended to improve energy efficiency and provide practical experience with R290 equipment installation and maintenance.
The remaining 30 units will be transferred to CARICOM partner countries for use in regional training facilities. The project aims to expand access to R290 technology and strengthen technical capacity for sustainable cooling across the Caribbean.
GRACE supports the introduction of energy-efficient room air conditioners using R290 in eight partner countries. The project is commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety under the International Climate Initiative.
According to the project, the R290 systems are free of fluorinated greenhouse gases and are intended to demonstrate the use of natural refrigerants in public institutions. GRACE also supports participating countries in reducing cooling-sector emissions and implementing the Paris Agreement and the Kigali Amendment.
