On May 28, Tam Ky City hosted a consultation workshop to finalize its Urban Cooling Action Plan (UCAP), developed under the “Sustainable Urban Cooling in Viet Nam Cities” project. The initiative responds to growing heat-related challenges in central Viet Nam, where Tam Ky faces projected cooling demand increases of over 30% by 2050 and significantly longer heatwaves by the end of the century.
The event was held at the Muong Thanh Grand Quang Nam Hotel and organized by the Quang Nam Department of Agriculture and Environment and the Viet Nam Department of Climate Change, with support from the UNEP Cool Coalition, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI). It gathered 35 stakeholders from government agencies, academia, and the private sector to build consensus on urban cooling priorities.
The UCAP includes technical strategies tailored to Tam Ky’s conditions, addressing heat through urban and building design measures. Key interventions include cool roofs, urban ventilation planning, nature-based solutions, and climate-adaptive building features such as optimal shading, natural ventilation, and efficient cooling systems. These measures aim to integrate into local policies while aligning with national climate targets and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Stakeholders reached agreement on the plan’s recommendations, paving the way for formal approval by Quang Nam’s Department of Agriculture and Environment. The workshop also helped refine technical and governance approaches for potential replication in other Vietnamese cities.
Tam Ky’s UCAP will serve as a reference for similar efforts in Can Tho City and beyond, as part of the UNEP Cool Coalition’s broader regional initiative to support sustainable cooling and urban heat resilience.
