On 3 December 2024, UNDP Türkiye, in collaboration with Cool Up, conducted an extensive training session in Ankara for technical personnel in the cooling sector. The program focused on the use of natural refrigerants, equipping participants with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills.
As Türkiye begins its phased reduction of synthetic refrigerants under the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, transitioning to natural refrigerants has become a priority. These substances could help limit global warming by 0.4°C by 2100, reinforcing their role in climate action and sustainable cooling.
The training covered key aspects of natural refrigerant applications, including characteristics, safety measures, and service procedures. Participants learned best practices for handling these substances safely, with a particular focus on risk mitigation, ignition hazards, and leakage prevention.
Developing local expertise in natural refrigerants contributes to sustainable cooling by reducing emissions and ensuring efficient system operation. Trained technicians enhance energy efficiency, support regulatory compliance, and minimize environmental impact. Additionally, capacity-building initiatives like this strengthen the local workforce, reducing reliance on foreign expertise and creating new job opportunities in the sector.
