Star Refrigeration’s Dr Andy Pearson will join Birmingham University Professor, Yulong Ding at the University of Glasgow’s workshop to discuss the potential for industrial heat pumps as a means to decarbonise heating and cooling across the UK.
The University of Glasgow is hosting a series of Net-Zero workshops organised by the James Watt School of Engineering and The Energy Technology Partnership (ETP). The workshops aim to provide an insight into the key issues identified in the decarbonisation of our energy systems as the transition to a low carbon future continues to gather pace.
Presenting at the first workshop in the series entitled ‘Challenges and Opportunities in Heat Decarbonisation’, Star’s Group Managing Director, Dr Andy Pearson, will share his expertise on the critical role industrial heat pumps will play in the decarbonisation of heating and cooling alongside University of Birmingham’s Professor Yulong Ding.
Chaired by Professor of Thermal Energy at the James Watt School of Engineering, Zhibin Yu, the free online workshop is scheduled to take place on Wednesday 1, 1 December from 13:30-14:45. The workshop will be accessible to view online via a Zoom link and any individuals who would like to attend are invited to register their interest via the link below.
During his presentation, Dr Pearson will put forward the industrial perspective on the issue of heat decarbonisation, with a particular focus on the technical, political and commercial factors affecting the take up of heat pumps.
Dr Pearson has extensive knowledge in this area, having led the engineering team responsible for the development of the world’s largest zero carbon 90°C ammonia district heat pump in Drammen, Norway, for which he later received the International Environmental Agency’s prestigious Rittinger Medal. More recently, he has been involved in the development of the Queens Quay district heating scheme in Clydebank – the first large-scale, high-temperature heat pump deployment in the UK-. The project was named ‘European Heat Pump City of the Year’ last September at the European Heat Pump Awards. Dr Pearson is an ASHRAE Fellow and the President of the Institution of Engineers in Scotland.
Professor Yulong Ding is the founding Chamberlain Chair of Chemical Engineering and Director of University of Birmingham Centre for Energy Storage and has received a number of accolades including most recently the election to Fellow of Royal Academy of Engineering (2020) and the award of IChemE Clean Energy Medal (2021).
During his presentation entitled ‘Heating and cooling decarbonisation – challenges and a super-energy-infrastructure based solution’ Prof. Ding will begin by exploring the challenge of heat decarbonisation – the largest obstacle to achieving net-zero. Using his in-depth knowledge, he will examine a number of widely advocated technical solutions to finally propose a super-energy-infrastructure based solution.
Professor Ding and Dr Pearson are expected to provide a valuable perspective on the subject of heat decarbonisation and the use of heat pumps as the key enabler for the reduction of carbon emissions of both cities and industrial processes. After a short introduction from Professor Yu, each speaker will provide their expert view for approximately 20 minutes. The final half-hour of the workshop will consist of a facilitated discussion session during which attendees are invited to take part.
