Today, 26 June, the global refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump community celebrates World Refrigeration Day, highlighting the essential role of cooling and sustainable heating in modern life.
Held annually on the birthday of Lord Kelvin, the international awareness day brings together technicians, engineers, manufacturers, educators, researchers, policymakers and industry organisations around the world.
The theme for World Refrigeration Day 2026 is “Cool Intelligence.” It recognises the combination of technology, professional knowledge and practical experience required to design, install, operate and maintain efficient cooling and heating systems.
Cool intelligence is present throughout everyday life. It helps protect food across the cold chain, maintain safe conditions for medicines and vaccines, provide comfortable indoor environments, support industrial processes and enable the operation of data centres and other digital infrastructure.
The 2026 theme also reflects the growing use of digital controls, monitoring systems and artificial intelligence in the refrigeration and HVACR sector. However, these technologies remain tools that support skilled professionals rather than replace their knowledge and experience.
World Refrigeration Day was founded by Stephen Gill to increase public understanding of an industry that is essential but often remains largely invisible outside the sector.
“We really have an incredible industry, and we should celebrate it,” Gill said in an
interview with Refindustry.
World Refrigeration Day has grown into a global initiative supported by professional associations, companies, educational institutions and international organisations. Events marking the day include technical conferences, webinars, training programmes, school activities and public awareness campaigns.
In 2026, organisations in different countries are once again using the occasion to discuss sustainable refrigeration, energy efficiency, professional skills and the future of cooling. The activities demonstrate that intelligent cooling is not limited to advanced equipment. It also depends on correct system selection, high-quality installation, responsible operation and well-trained people.
As demand for cooling and sustainable heating continues to grow, the industry faces the challenge of expanding access while reducing energy use and environmental impact. Meeting this challenge will require innovation, education and closer cooperation across the entire RACHP community.
Today, World Refrigeration Day offers an opportunity to recognise the professionals whose work keeps food fresh, medicines safe, buildings comfortable and essential infrastructure operating every day.
Happy World Refrigeration Day 2026!
