SEforALL joins African Energy Efficiency Alliance to advance continent-wide initiatives

SEforALL joins African Energy Efficiency Alliance to advance continent-wide initiatives

Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) has officially joined the African Energy Efficiency Alliance (AEEA), strengthening efforts to scale energy efficiency across the continent. The announcement was made at the Africa Climate Summit 2 on 9 September 2025 and aligns with the global COP28 Renewables and Energy Efficiency Pledge.

AEEA, launched by the African Energy Commission (AFREC) at COP29, serves as a regional platform to support energy efficiency programs in Africa. The continent’s energy demand is expected to double by 2040, making energy efficiency a key strategy for resilient and sustainable development, reduced energy costs, and improved access to electricity.

The initiative supports the Africa Energy Efficiency Strategy and Action Plan (AfEES), which aims to boost energy productivity by 50% by 2050 and 70% by 2063. Efficient appliances and equipment alone could save up to 175 TWh of electricity by 2040—equivalent to avoiding the need for more than 80 new 500 MW power plants—and generate over USD 175 billion in consumer benefits by 2030.

Through the collaboration, SEforALL will contribute to Mission Efficiency’s “Elevate. Support. Invest.” framework, with a focus on positioning Africa as a global leader in energy efficiency. This includes addressing regional disparities in energy intensity and promoting cross-border solutions.

“Joining the Africa Energy Efficiency Alliance is an opportunity to work hand in hand with the African Union to scale energy efficiency solutions that power growth and resilience across the continent,” said Elizabeth Wangeci Chege, SEforALL.

AFREC also emphasized the value of the partnership. “SEforALL has extensive experience in building strong partnerships and will significantly contribute to the Alliance’s mission of positioning energy efficiency at the forefront of Africa’s energy development,” said Yagouba Traore, AFREC.

As part of the alliance’s activities, SEforALL and AFREC are organizing the African Energy Efficiency Conference, scheduled for 10–11 December 2025 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The event will convene stakeholders across the region to advance the energy efficiency agenda.
