Solstice Advanced Materials has introduced Direct-to-YF (DTYF), an aftermarket concept for converting existing R-134a vehicle air conditioning systems to R-1234yf, at Automechanika Frankfurt 2026.

The retrofit is designed to work without replacing or modifying components of the existing R-134a circuit. The procedure runs in three steps: recovery of the remaining R-134a charge from the vehicle system and repair of the leak; fitting of a pair of newly designed snap-on 134a to R-1234yf adapters; and injection of a small quantity of an oil additive developed to optimise oil return to the compressor before the system is recharged with R-1234yf. An R-1234yf refrigerant identification label is then applied under the hood.

No new workshop equipment is required. European service points have serviced both R-134a and R-1234yf vehicles for years and already operate recovery, recycling and recharging (RRR) equipment for the two refrigerants used in the process, so the retrofit builds on established service capability.

The concept arrives as the EU F-Gas Regulation (2024/573) drives the HFC phasedown through a quota-based system, tightening supply of R-134a for the service market. R-1234yf is fully compliant with the mobile air conditioning (MAC) Directive (2006/40/EC) for new passenger vehicle air conditioning systems and is backed by an established service infrastructure across the aftermarket.

Retrofit components will reach professional workshops and service providers through the company’s existing European automotive aftermarket channels. A commercial availability date has not been set. Implementation detail will be covered in the technical session “A Simple Guide to Repair and Retrofit Older R-134a Cars with R-1234yf” on 9 September 2026 at Automechanika Frankfurt.

Solstice Advanced Materials, listed on Nasdaq as SOLS, was spun off from Honeywell and supplies refrigerants alongside materials for semiconductor manufacturing, data center cooling and other industries.

“The European aftermarket is currently servicing a vehicle fleet that includes more than 100 million R-134a systems alongside newer vehicles operating with R-1234yf,” said Rick Winick, Vice President and General Manager, Automotive Refrigerants, Solstice Advanced Materials. “The Direct-to-YF retrofit concept has been developed over the last three years… Independent technical evaluations and risk assessments have concluded that retrofit use is acceptable within the same assessment framework applied to new vehicle air conditioning systems.”
