Daikin Unveils Modular Air-to-Water Heat Pump with R-290 Refrigerant

Daikin is expanding its heat pump range with the introduction of the EWYK-QZ, a modular air-to-water heat pump that operates with the environmentally friendly refrigerant R-290 (propane). The system, designed for heating, cooling, and domestic hot water, aims to provide a sustainable alternative to conventional boilers. While the official market release is set for late 2025, Daikin will showcase a prototype at ISH Frankfurt, Europe’s leading HVAC trade fair, from 17 to 21 March.

Scalable Performance for Large-Scale Applications

The EWYK-QZ offers a modular setup with heating and cooling capacities starting at 100 kW for a single module and scaling up to 2000 kW in multi-module configurations. It can replace traditional boilers and supply hot water at temperatures up to 75°C. In cooling mode, it operates efficiently within an evaporator outlet temperature range of -15°C to +27°C and an ambient temperature range of -20°C to +46°C.

Modular Design for Flexible Installation

The modular concept allows multiple units to be linked and managed as a single system. Each module is available in 100 kW or 125 kW versions, and up to four can be combined into a 500 kW array. Four arrays, or 16 modules, can be integrated into a 2000 kW system, controlled via Daikin’s Intelligent Chiller Manager (iCM).

This design simplifies transport and installation. When paired with Daikin’s Manifold Kit and Pump Module, it offers a plug-and-play solution. Additional modules can be easily incorporated to expand system capacity as needed.

Safety Features and Environmental Benefits

The EWYK-QZ uses propane (R-290), a low-GWP refrigerant, reducing its environmental impact compared to traditional refrigerants. The system includes advanced safety measures:

  • Two refrigerant leak detectors – one on the refrigerant circuit and another inside the switch box.
  • Unit extraction fan – disperses refrigerant in case of a leak.
  • Switchbox fan – enhances safety by removing refrigerant from the switch box.
  • Visual and acoustic alarms – a siren alerts operators in case of a refrigerant leak.

All components are externally wired for easier integration and safe operation.

Remote Monitoring and Maintenance

Each module can be serviced independently, improving maintenance efficiency. Daikin on Site, the company’s remote monitoring system, enables real-time tracking and proactive maintenance to optimise performance and reduce downtime.

Energy Efficiency and Cost Savings

The EWYK-QZ’s full-inverter design dynamically adjusts to demand, improving efficiency and lowering operational costs. Key features include:

  • Scroll compressors with inverter technology for optimised energy use.
  • Brushless fans to enhance efficiency at partial loads.
  • A modular configuration to reduce on-off cycling, extending equipment lifespan and reliability.

The Daikin EWYK-QZ modular air-to-water heat pump is scheduled for market launch in late 2025, with a preview available at ISH Frankfurt 2025.
