Daikin Europe earns BREEAM Excellent for Belgium R&D centre

Daikin Europe has received BREEAM “Excellent” certification for its Research and Development Centre in Belgium, confirming the building’s environmental performance and alignment with a European sustainability standard for non-residential buildings.

Completed in 2024 and opened shortly afterward, EDC Ghent serves as Daikin Europe’s R&D headquarters and a hub for developing next-generation heating and cooling technologies. The 30,600 m² (approx. 329,400 ft²) building includes offices as well as large product and controls testing facilities.

The centre was designed as a nearly zero-energy building, integrating energy-efficient systems and smart controls to reduce energy use and environmental impact. It combines geothermal energy, air-source systems, heat recovery ventilation and a Building Management System that optimises energy flows while supporting a comfortable working environment.

BREEAM certification covers criteria beyond energy performance, including indoor environmental quality, water management and sustainable building management.
