Americold Expands Christchurch Facility to Meet Cold Storage Demand

Americold has commenced construction on a NZD$56 million (USD$34 million) expansion of its Halwyn facility in Hornby, Christchurch, more than doubling the site's capacity to support growing demand for temperature-controlled storage across New Zealand’s South Island.

The 15,240 m² (164,040 ft²) site is located at 32 Halwyn Drive, approximately 10 minutes from Christchurch Airport and 20 minutes from the city centre. This project is the company’s third regional expansion in the Asia-Pacific in the past two years.

The development aims to address rising needs in fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), retail, and quick service restaurant (QSR) sectors.

“Temperature-controlled warehouses play a critical role in the farm-to-table supply chain,” said Richard Winnall, President, International at Americold. “We operate varied types of facilities essential to the temperature-controlled food supply chain, also known as the cold chain. This ensures that products move from manufacturers to end consumers in a safe, reliable, cost-effective manner, with minimal environmental impact.”

Americold stated the expansion supports its strategy to deliver consistent service across constrained markets. The company also highlighted the sustainable design of the facility, incorporating energy savings and renewable technologies.

“This expansion demonstrates our unwavering commitment to local business, job creation and sustainable facility design. Our New Zealand facilities are leading the way within Americold, achieving significant kilowatt-hour savings, high emission reductions, rainwater harvesting and solar energy generation,” said Doug Seccombe, Managing Director APAC.

Seccombe added: “We have designed this facility to meet the immediate and future needs of our grocery and retail customers. This expansion will enable our South Island customers to grow their temperature-controlled supply chain now and into the future.”

The facility is intended to strengthen Americold’s service offering in the region and support long-term customer growth.
