Bannister Transport has begun the full-scale rollout of Sunswap’s zero-emission transport refrigeration technology across its 40-trailer fleet, aiming to become the UK’s first operator with a fully electric refrigerated trailer fleet.
The Worcestershire-based logistics company is implementing Sunswap’s Endurance units, which use battery storage and roof-mounted solar panels. Each new delivery replaces a diesel-powered system, with the full conversion projected to eliminate 1,760 tonnes of CO2 and 13,600 kg of NOx emissions over the units’ lifetime.
Sunswap’s solar-powered technology is designed to supply 80–85% of the energy needed for chilled operations. Bannister Transport stated it will maintain existing service levels while removing trailer emissions entirely.
Tom Owens, Owner and Managing Director of Bannister Transport, said: “The performance of the Sunswap units already in operation has exceeded our expectations in terms of reliability, run time and cost savings. We’re seeing clear evidence that this technology can deliver on its promise, which gives us complete confidence as we move toward becoming the UK’s first fully electric refrigerated fleet.”
The fleet upgrade is part of a wider decarbonisation strategy that includes investments in electric trucks and solar panel installation at the company’s Evesham depot.
Michael Lowe, CEO of Sunswap, added: “Bannister Transport’s commitment to creating the UK’s first fully electric refrigerated fleet demonstrates visionary leadership in sustainable logistics. We’re thrilled to support their journey as they systematically remove diesel refrigeration from their operations.”
Founded in 1965, Bannister Transport provides national temperature-controlled distribution services and is responding to increasing customer demand for low-carbon logistics options.
