James Hall & Co. has added three Carrier Transicold Vector High Efficiency (HE) 19 Multi-Temperature (MT) units to its trailer fleet, enabling diesel-free operation of double-deck trailers used in its wholesale supply to SPAR retail stores. Each unit is powered by a 23kW battery pack and mounted on Gray & Adams urban double-deck trailers.
The new Vector HE 19 MT units replace older diesel refrigeration systems, expanding the proportion of Carrier Transicold-cooled equipment to over half of the company’s 40-trailer fleet. The electric systems are designed to transport ambient, chilled and frozen products simultaneously, helping the company reduce fuel consumption and lower carbon emissions.
The units feature Carrier Transicold’s E-Drive electric technology and triple-temperature capabilities supported by two additional evaporators. Battery packs are installed on sliding mounting brackets for easy maintenance and can be recharged using a standard three-phase plug at the company’s depot. The integrated hermetic scroll compressor and economiser increase refrigeration capacity during pull-down by 40% and help improve refrigerant containment.
According to Ian Farnworth, Fleet Manager at James Hall & Co., “The autonomy levels of these new units have exceeded our expectations, often returning to the depot with battery charge remaining, helping us to take a step forward in our long-term sustainability strategy.”
James Hall & Co. has also received four 18-tonne Volvo FE trucks fitted with engineless Carrier Transicold Iceland MT units. These use the Eco-Drive system to draw power from the truck engine, further contributing to reduced emissions in its rigid fleet.
All new refrigeration units are covered by Carrier Transicold’s BluEdge fixed-cost full-service package, which includes annual temperature control testing, regulatory checks, and access to the oneCALL™ 24/7 incident management system. The new trailers are expected to operate six days a week and cover approximately 100,000 kilometres annually.
