Schmitz Cargobull AG, a leading European manufacturer of semi-trailers, has acquired a 27.5% equity stake in Sub Zero Insulation Technologies (SZIT), an Indian producer of refrigerated and dry freight truck bodies. The investment supports Schmitz Cargobull’s strategy to expand in emerging markets and strengthens its position in India’s growing cold chain logistics sector.
Under the agreement, Schmitz Cargobull will have the option to increase its shareholding over time. The partnership aims to modernize SZIT’s production at its Pune facility and introduce Schmitz Cargobull’s technologies, such as insulated panels and trailer telematics. Plans also include the export of modular kits for truck body applications and training programs between German and Indian teams.
Founded in 2015, SZIT produces over 1,500 units annually and supplies major Indian OEMs, including Tata Motors, Mahindra, Ashok Leyland, Volvo Eicher, Isuzu, and Bharat Benz. The company builds on the Khira family’s legacy in vehicle body manufacturing, dating back to 1949.
“India’s cold chain sector is evolving rapidly, and Sub Zero has demonstrated strong potential to lead this transformation,” said Andreas Schmitz, CEO of Schmitz Cargobull AG. “By combining Schmitz Cargobull’s engineering expertise with Sub Zero’s market reach, we aim to deliver high-quality, efficient transport solutions across India and beyond.”
Deep Khira, Founder & CEO of Sub Zero, added: “With Schmitz Cargobull as our partners, we are entering a new era of quality, technology, and international standards. By improving cold-chain efficiency, we can drastically cut wastage, boost farmer incomes, improve food availability, and significantly lower the carbon footprint from decomposing perishables.”
