Thermo King certifies truck units for B100 biofuel to support lower-emission transport

Thermo King, a brand of Trane Technologies, has extended compatibility of its diesel truck refrigeration units with EN 14214 standard B100 FAME (Fatty Acid Methyl Esters) biofuel. The certification enables customers to operate units using B100 without affecting maintenance intervals or warranty coverage.

The move supports Thermo King’s broader sustainability goals and offers an additional renewable fuel option for refrigerated transport fleets. It follows the company’s earlier validation of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) in 2021. Units running on B100 biofuel—typically made from rapeseed oil—can achieve lifecycle greenhouse gas emission reductions of up to 60%, and cut fine particulate matter by as much as 78%, depending on usage and fuel quality.

To use B100, the fuel must comply with the EN 14214 standard, and the refrigeration unit must be specifically prepared for compatibility. Thermo King diesel truck units meet NRMM (Non-Road Mobile Machinery) Stage V standards for B100 use, ensuring performance without compromising service or warranty.

A factory-installed B100 option is now available on all new Thermo King TX-Series models.

“Thermo King remains committed to delivering solutions contributing to a more sustainable refrigerated fleet and a cleaner environment,” said Davide Previsdomini, Product Manager SP Truck at Thermo King EMEA. “This development aligns with broader industry efforts to lower the environmental impact of refrigerated transport and highlights our dedication to supporting customers with existing, traditional and non-electrified fleets who are seeking responsible solutions for more sustainable operations.”
