Industry trade associations and professional bodies from around the world are united in establishing June 26th as World Refrigeration Day which will be celebrated all over the globe as an annual event. The entire world-wide industry is encouraged to take the opportunity to promote the significant role of refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat-pumps in the well-being of mankind.

It is intended that World Refrigeration Day will serve as a means of raising awareness and understanding to the general public of the significant role that the refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat-pumps industry and technology play in modern life and society with RACHP and HVACR organisations and professionals around the world undertaking a range of activities.

The term ‘refrigeration’ here is being used in its widest sense as the process of achieving and maintaining a required temperature below that of its surroundings. An example of refrigeration is the preservation and distribution of perishable food products.  Refrigeration systems are also used extensively for providing thermal comfort to human beings by means of air-conditioning.   Similarly, heat-pumps are devices that take heat from one source and move it to another location.

Refrigeration, air-conditioning, and heat-pump technologies and applications have evolved out of a human need for food, comfort and thermal processes, with a history dating back centuries, however it remains a longstanding frustration for those working within the industry that it is not widely recognised that modern life could not exist without it, nor is there any appreciation by wider society for the skills and knowledge employed on a daily basis by industry professionals.

Associations and societies from USA, India, Pakistan, Philippines, Thailand, Australia, Africa, the Middle East, and across Europe have all indicted their support for the establishment of the World Refrigeration Day:

Webinar: Refrigerants for Life: How Refrigerants Affect Modern Life

UN Environment OzonAction, American Society of Heating Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), and the World Refrigeration Day Secretariat are campaigning for the first World Refrigeration Day (WRD) with the theme of:

REFRIGERANTS FOR LIFE

During the first half of the 20th Century, mankind invented fluorinated refrigerants, based on the advancement of chemistry and mechanical engineering. However, refrigerants were known much earlier but were mostly using ice or other non-fluorinated refrigerants, such as Carbon Dioxide or Ammonia or Hydrocarbons, but with very limited use in terms of residential or industry applications. Over the last three decades, the world realized that the most safe and efficient refrigerants, that were used for decades, are contributing negatively to the global warming and ozone depletion and threatening life on the planet at longer terms. Because of that, industry and governments engaged in a legal and research processes to find alternatives and control the emissions of refrigerants while maintaining the pace of human development and style of life.

The Montreal Protocol is a live example of international successful efforts to combat the depletion of ozone layer through phasing out the ozone depleting substances (ODSs) including ozone depleting refrigerants as well as phasing down the higher-GWP refrigerants as per the Kigali Amendment.

To celebrate the first ever World Refrigeration Day, ASHRAE and UN Environment (OzonAction), in collaboration with World Refrigeration Day Secretariat are campaigning together, under the theme “Refrigerants for Life”.

Association Of Ammonia Refrigeration, India

Assovciation Of Ammonia Refrigeration, AAR, the society,  registered in India, http://ammoniaindia.org/ is having a One Day Training Program in Bangalore on 26th June, along with support from ISHRAE Bangalore Chapter and ASHRAE Bangalore Chapter. This program highlights the  natural refrigerant Ammonia, its applications, selection, installation and controls. AAR conducts  Advantage Ammonia Training Program every year in places across India. This particular program is being conducted on 26th June coinciding with the World Refrigeration Day.
