A-Gas Successfully Completes Refrigerant Recovery Project on Central Pier, Melbourne

A-Gas in Australia has recently completed a complex refrigerant recovery project on the historic Central Pier in Melbourne, Australia. The pier, which housed several restaurants and function centers, was scheduled for demolition, and its air conditioning systems contained high-global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants that required careful recovery.

Project Challenges

The client was determined to prevent the harmful release of refrigerants into the atmosphere but faced multiple challenges:

  • Access limitations: The site’s vulnerability meant that no vehicles or heavy machinery could be brought in, making it difficult to reach the decommissioned systems.
  • Compliance and safety: The client required the recovery to be performed with strict adherence to safety standards and local regulations.
  • Tight timelines: The recovery had to be completed quickly to stay in sync with the demolition schedule.

A-Gas Solution

A-Gas used its mobile and custom-designed recovery equipment, including 75-metre-long hoses, to safely and efficiently extract refrigerants from the hard-to-reach systems. Their Rapid Recovery Team was able to complete the project on time while maintaining safety and compliance.

Project Benefits

  • Environmental and compliance obligations met: The recovery of high-GWP refrigerants ensured that the harmful gases were not released into the atmosphere, helping the client meet its environmental and regulatory requirements.
  • Efficient execution: The highly mobile equipment enabled the A-Gas team to work swiftly and effectively despite the site’s constraints.
  • Detailed documentation: The client received compliance documentation and a certificate confirming the type and amount of refrigerant recovered.

Results

The refrigerants recovered from the Central Pier project were transported to A-Gas' local facility for further analysis and processing. The project was completed within the required timeline, supporting the client's demolition plans while ensuring environmental protection.

Daniel Tanaskovic, Sales and Operations Manager at A-Gas Rapid Recovery, stated, "We are pleased that A-Gas Rapid Recovery’s expertise was able to assist our client in meeting their environmental and compliance obligations, as well as tight project timeframes."
