AHRI: U.S. AC and Heat Pump Shipments Down 2.4% in March

The Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) reported that U.S. shipments of central air conditioners and air-source heat pumps totaled 818,761 units in March 2025, marking a 2.4 percent decrease compared to 838,626 units shipped in March 2024.

Within this total, shipments of central air conditioners declined by 7.3 percent to 436,291 units, compared to 470,653 units in March 2024. In contrast, shipments of air-source heat pumps rose by 3.9 percent, reaching 382,470 units, up from 367,973 units in the previous year.

On a year-to-date basis through March, combined shipments of central air conditioners and air-source heat pumps increased by 5.2 percent to 2,077,964 units, compared to 1,975,509 units during the same period in 2024. Year-to-date air conditioner shipments rose by 3.2 percent to 1,126,190 units, while heat pump shipments grew by 7.7 percent to 951,774 units.

In terms of capacity, most residential-size units (under 65,000 BTUH) showed mixed trends. For March 2025, units under 16.5 (000 BTUH) increased by 8.5 percent, while the 16.5–21.9 and 22–26.9 ranges declined by 25.9 percent and 9.4 percent, respectively. For year-to-date figures, these capacity categories saw variations ranging from a 13.9 percent increase to a 27.8 percent decline, depending on the size band.
