ALDI Nord and Viessmann present a joint energy project

To offer fresh products to our customers in the food retail trade, while protecting the climate: the two companies ALDI Nord and Viessmann are pursuing this goal with a project that was presented today during the Euroshop trade fair in Düsseldorf. With the sustainable energy system "ESyCool green" developed by Viessmann in close cooperation with the Essen-based discount company, the two companies set new standards for efficient cooling and heating with heat pump systems. In a first phase, 10 branches of ALDI Nord will be equipped with the innovative cold-heat interconnection system.

"We are delighted that the ALDI Nord group of companies is focusing on our holistic ESyCool concept on its way to more climate and environmental protection," says Dr. Frank Schmidt, Head of the Viessmann Division Cooling Systems. Christian Fleck, Managing Director of ALDI regional company Scharbeutz and project manager, says: "Part of our modernization is to make our branches more energy efficient and sustainable. We are increasingly focusing on environmentally friendly and natural refrigerants. We want to significantly increase the self-consumption rate of the self-generated energy by photovoltaic plants in our markets by combination with cold-and-heat composite plants and a demand-driven use of the photovoltaic plants. " "Through the comprehensive approach of the ESyCool concept, we are shaping our retail food retailers to energy-conscious stores," says Rayk Mende, Corporate Responsibility Director of ALDI Nord. Cooling and heating with storage effect The biggest savings potential lies solely in the refrigeration technology of the branches, which accounts for about 50 percent of the total electricity consumption. With "ESyCool green" considerable savings potentials are possible. It is a modular energy system that meets a high environmental demand for commercial cold and uses natural refrigerants. In future, fossil fuels for building heating will also be dispensed with. Instead, highly efficient electric heat pumps with the natural refrigerant R290 (propane) are used.

Heat pumps draw solar current from the store roof They are already prepared for operation with self-generated electricity from photovoltaic systems, supply the cooling points in the market via a cooling circuit and, if required, use the waste heat for heating the building. On particularly cold days, additional heat can be extracted very efficiently from a connected ice energy storage tank. And in the summer the ice in the store is available for the "natural cooling" of the cooling shelves and cells. Test phase completed positively At the end of 2015, Viessmann Kühlsysteme GmbH had already equipped the new ESyCool system with the innovative ESyCool system at the request of ALDI Nord. During the twelve-month test phase, the expectations regarding operational safety and energy efficiency of the entire plant were confirmed. At the end of 2016 and at the beginning of 2017 two new, likewise newly established ALDI Nord stores were already equipped with the ESyCool system in Schleswig-Holstein. The cooperation is now being extended to include 10 additional ALDI Nord stores with the ESyCool green system.   Read More
