ASHRAE and UNEP release sustainability tools for RAC plants

ASHRAE and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) OzonAction have introduced new checklists and guidance sheets to help refrigeration and air-conditioning (RAC) plants enhance performance, ensure compliance, and support sustainable operations. The free tools aim to assist technicians, engineers, suppliers, and plant managers in reducing emissions and improving energy efficiency.

The "Assessing RAC Plant Sustainability" materials are designed to address the challenges of maintaining and operating increasingly complex RAC systems, particularly with the introduction of new refrigerants and technologies requiring specialized knowledge. The tools support practical assessments across key operational areas.

“By helping RAC professionals assess and improve sustainability across key performance areas, we're empowering the industry to make data-informed decisions that benefit the environment, their workforce and their bottom line,” said 2025–26 ASHRAE President Bill McQuade, P.E., CDP, Fellow ASHRAE, LEED AP.

Plant managers can use the tools to evaluate operations in eight areas, including refrigerant emissions, energy use, and preventive maintenance. Equipment suppliers can apply the checklists to train customers in maintenance practices that improve efficiency and life-cycle performance. Engineers are encouraged to incorporate the tools into training documentation to align design objectives with field performance.

The guidance includes recommendations on energy-efficient operation, life-cycle investment planning, and key indicators for equipment upgrades. These tools are part of ASHRAE and UNEP’s broader initiative to support sustainable cooling practices under the Montreal Protocol framework.
