Australia and New Zealand release E3 Strategy for appliance efficiency to 2035

The Energy and Climate Change Ministerial Council has agreed to release the Equipment Energy Efficiency (E3) Strategy, a set of documents guiding appliance and equipment energy efficiency policy across Australia and New Zealand through 2035. The strategy outlines the future direction of the Equipment Energy Efficiency (E3) Program, also known as MEPS, which addresses energy performance standards and information for appliances and equipment.

The E3 Strategy was developed collaboratively by the Australian federal, state and territory governments together with the government of New Zealand. The initiative reflects what officials describe as a long-standing partnership across all E3 jurisdictions to coordinate energy efficiency policies.

The strategy includes three core documents. The E3 Strategic Plan sets out the long-term vision for the next decade, aiming to ensure the program remains responsive to technological change and evolving energy priorities. The E3 Implementation Plan defines the coordinated actions governments will take to achieve the strategic objectives, while the Annual E3 Workplan identifies priority activities and projects to be carried out each year.

According to the program outline, the strategy focuses on strengthening energy efficiency standards and product information, increasing consumer access to energy-saving appliances and equipment, reducing emissions, and supporting long-term energy security. It also aims to ensure the program remains aligned with emerging technologies and market developments.

The strategy documents are available through the Energy Rating website. Work on implementing the actions described in the Implementation Plan and the annual Workplan is expected to begin in the coming months, with stakeholders to be informed as progress continues.
