The Australian government has extended its financial support for employers and apprentices in priority and clean energy occupations, including refrigeration and air conditioning, under the Key Apprenticeship Program (KAP). The updated measures aim to strengthen the workforce in critical sectors by continuing payments through December 2026.
The KAP, which began on July 1, 2025, includes New Energy Apprenticeships and provides financial incentives to boost participation in key trades. Since its launch, over 15,400 new energy apprentices have commenced training under the program and its predecessor.
Employers can receive up to AUD 5,000 (approx. USD 3,300) in incentive payments, disbursed in two instalments during the first year of an apprentice’s training. Apprentices may receive up to AUD 10,000 (approx. USD 6,600) if enrolled full-time, or AUD 5,000 (approx. USD 3,300) part-time. Full-time apprentices receive AUD 2,000 at 6, 12, 24, and 36 months and on completion. Part-time apprentices receive AUD 1,000 at the same milestones.
Eligible training includes both UEE and MEM Certificate III (and higher) level courses in refrigeration and air conditioning. Details on all qualifying courses are available via the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations.
Apprentices required to relocate for training can receive tax-free support of AUD 120 per week in their first year, AUD 90 in the second, and AUD 45 in the third. Additional support includes access to loans and wage support for apprentices with disabilities.
The Group Training Organisation (GTO) Reimbursement Pilot Program, which began in early 2025, allows small and medium enterprises to be reimbursed for placing apprentices through GTOs. The pilot is capped at 400 placements and will close to new applicants on April 30, 2026, or once the cap is reached.
