Carrier Achieves Milestone in DOE Cold Climate Heat Pump Challenge with New High-Efficiency Units

Carrier, a leader in intelligent climate and energy solutions and a subsidiary of Carrier Global Corporation, has successfully completed the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Cold Climate Heat Pump Challenge for residential applications. The first cold climate heat pumps from this challenge are set for production this month at Carrier’s recently designated Center of Excellence in Collierville, TN.

Consumers in colder regions can take advantage of incentives such as rebates and tax credits ranging from $2,000 to $8,000, depending on location and eligibility, to purchase these high-efficiency heat pumps.

Carrier's breakthrough units, designed to operate efficiently in extreme cold, were field-tested in Syracuse, NY, during the 2022-2023 heating and cooling seasons. The units delivered reliable performance, operating at full capacity at 0 degrees Fahrenheit and continuing to function down to -13 degrees Fahrenheit in field conditions, with lab tests demonstrating operation down to -23 degrees Fahrenheit. These heat pumps also include Bluetooth-enabled digital monitoring through Carrier’s Connected Portal and advanced defrost technology to optimize performance.

“Carrier’s engineering team went above and beyond the challenge criteria, incorporating new, innovative technologies that provide consistent comfort in even the harshest climates,” said Nick Arch, Vice President and General Manager, Residential HVAC Solutions at Carrier.

These heat pumps, part of Carrier’s Infinity series with Greenspeed Intelligence, are the first in the company's residential portfolio to provide 100% heating capacity at 5 degrees Fahrenheit. They will use Carrier’s preferred refrigerant, R-454B (Puron Advance), and are eligible for up to $2,000 in tax credits and additional state and utility rebates.

In addition to Carrier’s success in the residential sector, the company is advancing commercial heat pump technologies through the DOE’s Better Buildings Commercial Heat Pump Accelerator, furthering its commitment to sustainability and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Carrier aims to help customers avoid over one gigaton of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 as part of its $4 billion investment in sustainable solutions.
