The Climate and Ozone Protection Alliance (COPA), initiated under the IKI-funded project, has completed its project phase. While the project has officially ended, the alliance itself will continue its work on global refrigerant management.
Launched in 2022, COPA was established in response to the growing need for coordinated action on ozone-depleting substances (ODS) and hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) banks. With rising global demand for cooling and air conditioning, the initiative sought to bring international attention to the environmental impact of these substances. COPA has provided a platform for collaboration across governments, private sector, civil society, academia, and financial institutions.
The alliance currently includes 81 members, each contributing to the effort to manage ODS and HFC banks through improved recovery, recycling, and reclamation practices. COPA encourages continued engagement from its members to develop solutions tailored to institutional and national needs.
As the alliance moves forward, its secretariat has transitioned from GIZ to new leadership under Mengjia Li (UNIDO) and Jomari Guillermo (UNDP), who will continue to coordinate support for members and activities.
