ENGIE Refrigeration celebrates a double anniversary

2021 is a very special year for ENGIE Refrigeration, as the company celebrates two anniversaries: in 1921, one hundred years ago, the success story of the refrigeration and heating specialist began in Lindau with the founding of Escher Wyss Lindau, the company’s predecessor. In addition, ENGIE Refrigeration moved to its modern head office in Josephine-Hirner-Straße exactly five years ago – and has been on the fast lane ever since.

From small refrigeration systems for commercial facilities to the most powerful chillers on the market: this summer, ENGIE Refrigeration can look back on 100 years of company history at its Lindau location. In 1921, Escher Wyss Werke Zürich acquired an existing factory site in the Bavarian district town for the mass production of chillers. Production of the first chiller began just one year later. ‘ENGIE Refrigeration has always been based in Lindau on Lake Constance – and I am delighted that this has been the case now for 100 years. This is an important part of our company’s history and contributes to our success. We still have deep roots in this place, and we are an important provider of employment and training in the Lake Constance region,’ says Jochen Hornung, CEO of ENGIE Refrigeration. Today ENGIE Refrigeration supplies chillers and heat pumps to customers around the world – most of them developed and produced in Josephine-Hirner-Straße. Exactly five years ago, the company moved to its new premises with an ultramodern production hall and comfortable administration building. A lot has happened since the move in 2016 – such as the acquisition of the CO2 high-temperature heat pump division of Hafner-Muschler Kälte- und Klimatechnik in June 2018. This strengthened the company’s market position in the field of heat utilisation. Last year ENGIE Refrigeration launched its completely overhauled air-cooled QUANTUM Air and PENSUM Air series, which are among the most efficient chillers in the world.

The latest milestone in this success story came just a few days ago: with the redesign of the water-cooled QUANTUM Water series in June 2021, the refrigeration and heating expert consolidated its pioneering role on the international market. ENGIE Refrigeration is thus responding to the current and future needs of its customers: ‘At ENGIE Refrigeration we have always aimed to develop and produce the highest-quality and most sustainable chillers and heat pumps in the world. We want to set standards on the international refrigeration market, and we have been achieving this aim again and again for 100 years,’ says Jochen Hornung. Always in focus: ‘Zero carbon transition as a service’, the mission of the French ENGIE Group. The aim is to help customers reduce their ecological footprint with low-carbon technologies and services. And ENGIE Refrigeration will continue to do its utmost to achieve this aim in future as well.
