Daikin Unveils CO2 VRV System for the European Market

Daikin, a global leader in heat pump and Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) technology, has announced the launch of its new VRV system utilizing R-744 refrigerant (CO2) for the European market. This innovation marks a significant step in Daikin's commitment to reducing carbon footprints and supporting the transition to net zero-carbon buildings.

Flexible Refrigerant Solutions for Decarbonisation

Daikin’s strategic vision emphasizes the importance of diverse refrigerant options tailored to specific application challenges. The company recognizes that decarbonizing the building sector requires a multi-faceted approach rather than a single solution. By introducing its CO2 VRV range, alongside its existing R-32 VRV systems, Daikin provides customers with flexible and sustainable options.

Bernard Dehertogh, Deputy General Manager DX at Daikin Europe N.V., highlighted the company’s commitment to balancing safety, energy efficiency, environmental impact, and life-cycle cost when selecting refrigerants. He affirmed that the new CO2 VRV system strengthens Daikin's portfolio of solutions for decarbonizing commercial buildings.

Benefits of the CO2 VRV System

Using R-744 (CO2) refrigerant, the new VRV system offers significant advantages:

  • Ultra-Low GWP: With a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 1, CO2 stands out as one of the most environmentally friendly refrigerants.
  • Safety: CO2 is classified as a non-flammable refrigerant (A1) according to ISO 817 standards.
  • VRV Versatility: The CO2 VRV system retains all the benefits of Daikin’s VRV technology, including ease of design and installation, precise climate zone control, and quick response times.

Certified by Eurovent, the CO2 VRV system is designed for targeted decarbonization applications, such as supermarkets and retail establishments, where natural refrigerants are increasingly prioritized. This system will be available starting in April 2025.

Expanding the VRV Portfolio

The introduction of CO2 VRV builds on Daikin’s proven VRV technology, which has already significantly reduced CO2 emissions compared to fossil fuel-based heating systems. With the addition of CO2 refrigerant to its VRV range, Daikin can now address a broader range of applications while maintaining a focus on energy efficiency, environmental impact, and compliance with regulatory trends.

George Dimou, VRV Product Manager at Daikin Europe N.V., emphasized that the CO2 VRV innovation aligns with decarbonization initiatives and provides stakeholders with future-proof solutions. Daikin is committed to educating and training its network to ensure seamless adoption of this new technology.
