The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced the finalization of its third rule under the American Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act to phase down hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). These potent greenhouse gases are commonly used in refrigeration and air conditioning. The AIM Act, enacted in 2020, aims to cut HFC production and consumption in the U.S. by 85% over 15 years.
The new rule focuses on enforcing compliance with phasedown targets, establishing a comprehensive emissions reduction and reclamation program. This includes mandates for leak repair, automatic leak detection systems, and using reclaimed HFCs in repairs. The rule also enhances data reporting and oversight of the HFC market, ensuring alignment with global climate objectives.
