Natural refrigerants market projected to reach $2.3 billion by 2032

The global natural refrigerants market is expected to grow from $1.5 billion in 2025 to $2.3 billion by 2032, according to a new report by Meticulous Research. The projected compound annual growth rate (CAGR) is 5.9%, driven by regulatory actions phasing out hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and increased demand for environmentally friendly cooling solutions.

Hydrocarbons currently hold over 37% of the market share, valued for their low environmental impact. Ammonia is expected to record the highest growth rate due to its zero ozone depletion potential and minimal global warming effect. Carbon dioxide refrigerants are also gaining adoption as alternatives to synthetic gases. Propane is increasingly used in residential and commercial air conditioning applications.

Refrigeration leads the application segment with more than 52% market share, driven by demand in food preservation, pharmaceuticals, and cold storage. The air-conditioning segment is projected to grow at the fastest pace, reflecting interest in energy-efficient systems. Industrial refrigeration applications are supporting the adoption of ammonia and carbon dioxide refrigerants, while commercial uses continue to expand, particularly in supermarkets and cold storage facilities.

By end-user, the industrial sector accounts for over 45% of the market, propelled by food and beverage production and chemical manufacturing. The commercial segment is expected to see the highest growth, with rising demand in retail and commercial buildings. Residential use is also increasing as consumers seek environmentally friendly cooling technologies. Government policies are supporting energy efficiency improvements across all segments.

Regionally, Asia-Pacific leads the market with over 44% share and is projected to grow at over 7% CAGR, with Japan and Australia among early adopters. Europe maintains strong momentum through regulatory initiatives, while North America shows significant potential, notably with California’s mandate to shift to ultra-low GWP refrigerants by 2035.

Key drivers include growing awareness of sustainable refrigerants, technological advancements in system components, and government-led energy efficiency programs. Challenges remain in cost, technical complexity, safety handling, and the need for skilled technicians.

“The natural refrigerants market represents a critical shift toward sustainable cooling solutions, driven by global HFC phase-out regulations and environmental consciousness. Our research indicates ammonia refrigerants will experience the highest growth due to zero ozone depletion potential, while Asia-Pacific leads adoption with over 7% CAGR supported by government environmental initiatives,” said Mr. Uddhav Sable, Research Director at Meticulous Research.

Leading market players include Airgas Inc., Linde PLC, Engas Australasia, Tazzetti S.p.A., Puyang Zhongwei Fine Chemical Co. Ltd., A-Gas International Limited, Danfoss A/S, and others, focusing on innovation, sustainability, and strategic partnerships with HVAC manufacturers.
