HPA survey highlights installer support efforts across heat pump sector

The Heat Pump Association (HPA) has released new survey findings outlining the support available for newly qualified heat pump installers across the sector. The data reflects efforts by manufacturers, distributors, training providers and installation companies to help new entrants transition from training to on-the-job deployment.

The publication follows a UK government announcement of an additional £5 million to extend the Heat Training Grant until March 2026. The scheme aims to support training for an additional 5,500 heat pump installers and 3,500 heat network professionals. Over 10,650 individuals have completed training through the scheme to date.

According to HPA data, 9,062 individuals successfully completed a recognised heat pump qualification in 2024. However, modelling suggests up to 39% of those do not immediately begin installing heat pumps. The HPA underscores the need for structured support to bridge the gap between qualification and practical application.

The survey found that nearly 80% of responding HPA member organisations offer additional support to newly qualified installers, with over 60% providing these services at no additional cost. Common forms of support include in-person mentoring, digital tools such as apps, and enhanced training covering sales, maintenance, and installation reviews.

Half of the organisations surveyed also reported plans to expand their support offerings in the future. The results are presented in a new infographic summarising current industry efforts and future intentions.

Laura Thomas, Chair of the HPA Training Working Group, said: “It is vital that we have a skilled and confident workforce to deliver the growth in heat pump deployment needed to reach the Government’s carbon reduction targets. The results from this survey highlight the steps being taken by the sector to support newly qualified installers beyond gaining a qualification. However, we recognise that challenges remain, and as an industry we must continue to work together to expand and improve the support available, ensuring more installers can transition from completing a qualification to actively installing heat pumps.”

The HPA stated it will continue engaging with industry stakeholders to improve pathways into heat pump installation careers and address remaining barriers.
