IIR joins INDEE3 project to support low-carbon cooling in India

The International Institute of Refrigeration (IIR) has joined the new INDEE3 project as a strategic partner to promote sustainable heating and cooling technologies in India. Funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and led by SINTEF Energy, the four-year initiative began in May 2025 and will run until December 2028.

INDEE3 continues the mission of the earlier INDEE+ project and focuses on promoting natural refrigerants, improving refrigerant lifecycle management, and developing more efficient cold chain systems across sectors such as seafood, food processing, and buildings. The project aims to support India’s shift towards low-carbon technologies amid rising temperatures, growing food security concerns, and increasing energy demand.

India currently faces significant challenges in refrigeration efficiency, with up to 40% of food production lost due to inadequate cold chains, refrigerant leaks, and inefficient energy use. These issues are particularly severe for perishable goods such as fruits, vegetables, and seafood.

The project involves 11 partners: SINTEF Energy, NTNU, the Norwegian Environment Agency, IIT Madras, IISc, BITS Pilani, CEEW, AEEE, ISHRAE, IIT Kharagpur, and the IIR. Together, they aim to support India’s climate commitments under the Kigali Amendment and its national goals as outlined in the India Cooling Action Plan.

As a strategic partner, the IIR will facilitate knowledge exchange between Indian and Norwegian institutions and industry stakeholders. It will also organise project workshops and disseminate outcomes through IIR events and co-sponsored conferences.
