Johnson Controls, a global leader in smart, healthy, and sustainable building solutions, is amplifying its national workforce development initiative through the Johnson Controls Academy. In collaboration with Lincoln Tech, this expansion aims to meet the booming demand for skilled technicians in building systems' installation, service, and maintenance. Graduates are expected to fill service technician roles across the U.S.
The program, now broadened to Lincoln Tech's Denver campus alongside its Columbia, Maryland location, will double the number of technicians trained. This move addresses a critical shortage of skilled building technicians, driven by an aging workforce and the rising complexity of building technologies. According to recent reports, 46% of HR professionals find skilled trades positions "very difficult" to fill.
As more businesses and municipalities focus on upgrading facilities for greater efficiency, safety, and comfort, the demand for skilled technicians in managing these complex systems has never been higher. The inaugural class at the Denver campus marks a pivotal step in addressing this workforce challenge.
Julie Brandt, President of Building Solutions North America at Johnson Controls, stated, "Our goal with the Johnson Controls Academy is to train more than 300 new technicians each year, directly responding to the increasing demand in our industry. The program fills critical roles and fosters a diverse, innovative community for sustainable, long-term impact."
The academy offers a six-week intensive training program, preparing future technicians for roles in security and fire installation and service. The hands-on training complements Lincoln Tech's Electrical programs, equipping participants for real-world applications. Johnson Controls supports on-site housing during the program and covers relocation expenses upon completion. Graduates benefit from a retention coach for one year post-graduation to ensure successful onboarding.
Scott Shaw, President and CEO of Lincoln Tech, expressed, "This partnership with Johnson Controls expands our training programs, offering graduates hands-on experience and direct career pathways aligned with market needs. We're proud to help build a future-ready talent pool essential for efficient and sustainable building operations."
The ongoing collaboration, initiated in 2018, enhances classroom experiences with state-of-the-art technology. Johnson Controls is committed to workforce development from K-12 through to professional careers, providing resources like the Community College Partnership Program, STEM 101, and HVAC labs to foster the development of smart, healthy, and sustainable buildings.
