Liebherr-Transportation Systems has been commissioned by Stadler Rheintal AG to deliver 166 HVAC units using propane as a refrigerant, set to be installed in Stadler’s NT FLIRT NEX trains, also known as Nordic Express. These climate-friendly systems offer an eco-efficient alternative to traditional coolants.
The delivery of 34 cab units and 132 saloon HVAC units will commence in early 2025 and continue over several years. These units will serve 17 Nordic Express trainsets, reflecting a new series of long-distance trains based on Stadler’s FLIRT platform.
Manufactured at Liebherr's Bulgarian facility, these HVAC systems employ the refrigerant R290 (propane), boasting a global warming potential (GWP) of just three. This development promotes sustainable mobility in rail transport.
Liebherr highlights the reliability and minimal downtime of these HVAC systems, which adhere to necessary safety standards. Deputy General Manager Roland Friedrich expressed gratitude to Stadler for their trust, emphasizing the efficiency and eco-friendliness of propane-based systems in providing sustainable HVAC solutions.
