Mitsubishi Electric Wins Order to Supply Eco-Friendly R290 HVAC Systems for Munich's Next-Gen S-Bahn Trains

Mitsubishi Electric's Italian subsidiary, Mitsubishi Electric Klimat Transportation Systems S.p.A., has secured a significant order from Siemens Mobility GmbH to supply 1,350 HVAC systems using the eco-friendly refrigerant R290. These systems are set to be installed in the next-generation S-Bahn trains in Munich, Germany, from fiscal 2026 to 2032. This marks the first time a Japanese affiliate will deliver R290-refrigerant HVAC systems for trains.

The order comprises 1,170 units for train cabins and 180 units for train cockpits. The use of R290, a natural propane refrigerant with a low Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 0.02, underscores a commitment to sustainability. Mitsubishi Electric's HVAC systems are designed for high energy efficiency, offering a high Coefficient of Performance (COP) and lower power consumption compared to traditional refrigerants like R407C and R134a. Additionally, these systems comply with the EU’s F-Gas Regulation, aiding decarbonization efforts.

To ensure safety, the HVAC systems incorporate multiple small-scale refrigeration cycles to keep the refrigerant charge below flammability limits, in accordance with EN378-1 regulation. The system also features seamless piping to prevent leaks into the train cabin, further enhancing safety.

This order from Siemens Mobility is part of a broader initiative by Bayerische Eisenbahngesellschaft mbH and DB Regio AG to procure new trains that meet increasing passenger expectations. The initiative also aims to introduce advanced technologies for improved transportation, reduced power consumption, and enhanced sustainability.
