MOON-TECH Expands Solutions to Nuclear Island Cooling and Energy Heating

MOON-TECH has made significant strides in supporting the development of key components for fourth-generation nuclear reactors, marking a notable achievement in China’s innovative technology sector. The first high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) nuclear power plant commenced commercial operations in December 2023 at Huaneng Shidao Bay, reflecting China’s leadership in the global fourth-generation nuclear power technology field.

In early 2024, the Chinese government recognized the breakthroughs in fourth-generation nuclear power units. By August, the State Council approved five nuclear power projects, signaling rapid growth in this sector. MOON-TECH has been instrumental in this progress, particularly through innovations in environmental control and energy utilization. The company secured a pivotal role in the air cooler project for the HTGR's containment shield cooling water system, earning acclaim from China Nuclear Energy and Tsinghua University Nuclear Research Institute.

The non-powered air cooler developed by MOON-TECH ensures stable temperature control within the HTGR chamber. Over nearly a year, the company tackled various technical challenges, gaining vital data on chamber temperature distribution, cooler structure parameters, and natural convection heat transfer. This led to successful tests and inspections in August 2024, paving the way for mass production.

The HTGR boasts advantages like modular power units, multi-module combinations, and co-generation of electricity, heat, hydrogen, and water, facilitating large-scale adoption. China’s advancement in this technology positions HTGR for quick development.

MOON-TECH’s contributions extend beyond non-powered air coolers to include solutions for nuclear island cooling processes and nuclear energy heating. These encompass technologies for cooling waste heat recovery, co-production and delivery of water and heat, and nuclear energy heating over long distances, applied to projects such as seawater desalination.

MOON-TECH continues to invest in R&D for nuclear power components, supporting China’s adoption of advanced nuclear energy systems and enhancing global energy safety and efficiency.
