The North American Sustainable Refrigeration Council (NASRC), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to advancing climate-friendly natural refrigerants in supermarket applications, has announced the launch of R-TRADE (Refrigeration Technician Recruitment, Advancement, Development, and Education). This groundbreaking nationwide workforce development program aims to tackle the critical shortage of refrigeration technicians by implementing recruitment, training, and retention initiatives. Thanks to the support of founding partners Walmart, Amazon, Costco, Kroger, and Albertsons, the program is now set in motion.
With the refrigeration industry transitioning away from hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerants due to new regulations and corporate climate commitments, the shortage of skilled technicians presents a significant challenge. R-TRADE will provide essential solutions to equip technicians and facilitate this transition.

This initiative builds on NASRC’s existing workforce development programs, expanding solutions identified through their Workforce Development Assessment report.
Walmart and Amazon have contributed significant funding to support the program, surpassing the suggested donation amount. The Founding Partners will also offer their industry insights to help guide the initiative.
“We’re proud to support the development of the next generation of refrigeration technicians,” said Brandon Ballard, Senior Director of Facility Services for Refrigeration and HVAC at Walmart. “R-TRADE is a vital initiative for meeting our climate goals while addressing regulatory changes.”
NASRC invites stakeholders across the refrigeration industry to participate in R-TRADE and help build a sustainable, skilled workforce that will support the industry's future.
