Nidec ACIM has inaugurated a new production line for Embraco FMS compressors at its Joinville facility in Brazil. The unit, part of Nidec's Global Appliance platform, will produce up to 5 million compressors per year and generate over 220 direct jobs.
The launch event was attended by government authorities, including Santa Catarina’s Governor Jorginho Mello and Joinville’s Deputy Mayor Rejane Gambin, alongside company executives from Nidec ACIM, Nidec Global Appliance, and Nidec’s Appliance Automotive Division.
The investment is part of Nidec’s global strategy focused on innovation and sustainability. Katia Drusian, Director of Nidec ACIM, stated that the expansion supports the global production of more energy-efficient refrigeration systems. She noted that the Joinville facility was the first Nidec plant to achieve carbon-neutral status.
The Embraco FMS compressor family uses variable-speed (inverter) technology and offers over 40% energy savings in some models. It is designed for a wide range of residential refrigeration applications and complies with new Brazilian energy efficiency regulations from INMETRO that take effect in 2026.
Compact and lightweight, the FMS measures just 12 cm in height—33% smaller than its predecessor. It also uses the natural refrigerant R600a (isobutane), which has near-zero global warming potential and no ozone depletion impact. In 2024, 77% of Embraco compressors sold globally used natural refrigerants.
“By focusing on the production of the FMS, we take an important step toward the highest standards of energy efficiency, while contributing to the democratization of variable-speed technology,” said Alberto Casnati, President of Nidec Global Appliance.
