Star Refrigeration at Conference on Natural Refrigerants in Spain

Dr Andy Pearson, Group Managing Director of Star Refrigeration, is heading to Valencia for the 13th IIR Gustav Lorentzen Conference on Natural Refrigerants on Monday 18th June. Dr Pearson has been invited to the event as one of the UK’s industry leaders on natural refrigerants including ammonia and carbon dioxide and will present the keynote lecture on Tuesday morning.

The International Institute of Refrigeration conference takes place from 18-20 June 2018 at The Universitat Politècnica de València. Dr Pearson will present a paper about small industrial refrigeration systems utilising CO2 on Monday 18th June at 11am, and will deliver the keynote lecture ‘Refrigerating with Ammonia’ on Tuesday 19th June at 8.30 am.

The renowned event attracts refrigeration industry professionals from all over the world to discuss research and network. GL2018 focuses on natural refrigerants and sustainable cooling solutions, which Star Refrigeration have years of expertise in, demonstrated in the company’s groundbreaking research and packaged refrigeration systems which use CO2 or ammonia. In 2016 the conference was held in Edinburgh and Star was a major contributor to the event, delivering nine presentations and inviting delegates to see pioneering ammonia and CO2 installations in the local area.

Dr Andy Pearson said, “Star Refrigeration is one of the frontrunners in UK industrial refrigeration, and we’re pleased to be attending this platform to share our knowledge and experiences. Planning for the sustainable future of cooling is critical, and I believe natural refrigerants such as ammonia and CO2 hold the answer to many end user’s problems.

His paper ‘The Application Of Carbon Dioxide To Small Industrial Refrigeration Systems’ discusses the reasons why CO2 is a suitable replacement for HFCs and synthetic refrigerants, even in smaller applications. The parameters considered in the study include efficiency, reliability, simplicity, maintainability and the likely degradation of performance over time (a factor which is usually ignored when comparing and contrasting systems). Capital cost and opportunities for future development are also examined.

Star Refrigeration has recently launched an industry first – a pre-packed industrial CO2 cooling solutions designed for smaller scale industrial applications. The Envi range of chillers and freezers are designed for capacities under 300kW and offer a high performance, energy efficient, sustainable long-term solution without the high capital costs linked to ammonia systems.

Ammonia, as a natural refrigerant will also be explored in Pearson’s keynote lecture on Tuesday morning. He will discuss the historical background of ammonia refrigeration reflecting on the fact that after 150 years of use, ammonia, a natural refrigerant with zero ozone depleting potential (ODP) and zero global warming potential (GWP), is still the most environmentally friendly and efficient refrigerant known to man.He will also review the evolution of ammonia refrigeration technology, from traditional ammonia pump circulation systems with a charge bigger than 2500g/kW to Optimized DX (1250g/kW) to modern low charge ammonia packaged systems with charges as little as 100-700g/kW.

Don’t miss Star’s Dr Pearson throughout the conference programme
