Sunswap, a British company specializing in solar and battery-powered transport refrigeration units (TRUs), has announced the expansion of its production capabilities with a new facility in Leatherhead, Surrey. The site will manufacture the company's Endurance TRUs, designed for the UK and European markets, supporting the shift to zero-emission solutions in the cold chain sector.
This development comes as demand grows among retailers and logistics companies, fueled by partnerships with firms such as DFDS, TIP, Samworth Brothers, Staples Vegetables, and Cranswick. The new facility enables Sunswap to oversee production quality directly, implement product updates efficiently, and respond to customer needs promptly.
The facility is designed to scale production capacity as Sunswap expands further into Europe. It is expected to generate 75 new jobs in Surrey, contributing to the local economy and supporting the company’s broader sustainability objectives.
Sunswap’s Endurance units utilize a combination of battery storage and solar panels, offering the potential to meet up to 100% of refrigeration energy needs during certain operations. Over a 10-year lifespan, the system can help logistics fleets cut CO2 emissions by approximately 120 tonnes and reduce operating costs by up to 81% compared to diesel-powered alternatives.
This investment underscores Sunswap’s commitment to advancing British manufacturing and accelerating the adoption of environmentally friendly technologies in transport refrigeration.
