EDEKA Patchull E-Center Darmstadt has introduced a pioneering refrigeration technology featuring zero direct global warming potential, marking its first appearance in a retail environment. Developed by Darmstadt-based company MAGNOTHERM, this technology is showcased through two magnetocaloric beverage coolers positioned by the registers, offering shoppers a chance to experience magnetically-chilled beverages.
Magnetic cooling, which eliminates the need for traditional compressor and refrigerant gases, provides several advantages, including lower energy costs, reduced maintenance, and enhanced safety by avoiding flammability and explosivity risks. MAGNOTHERM CEO and co-founder Timur Sirman emphasizes the energy-intensive and potentially unsafe nature of conventional refrigeration, positioning magnetic cooling as a superior alternative.
Unlike traditional systems that use compressors and refrigerant gases contributing to climate change emissions, magnetic cooling employs magnets and magnetically-active metal at atmospheric pressure, using a water-based liquid to transfer coolness to the cabinet.
MAGNOTHERM refrigerators are available this summer at EDEKA Patschull’s E-Center Darmstadt, located at Eschollbrücker Straße 44, 64295 Darmstadt, and at Edeka Ercan locations in Langen and Ober-Ramstadt.
