Trane Technologies and AWS Cut Energy Use by 15% in Amazon Grocery Sites

Trane Technologies and Amazon have reported a 15% reduction in energy use at three Amazon Grocery fulfillment centers in North America, following a pilot project using artificial intelligence to optimize HVAC systems. The initiative, powered by BrainBox AI and supported by Amazon Web Services (AWS), aims to accelerate energy efficiency and decarbonization across Amazon’s facilities.

BrainBox AI’s autonomous system, now part of Trane Technologies, was deployed to optimize HVAC performance without compromising comfort or operational standards. The energy savings achieved were more than double the original project targets. Based on these results, Amazon plans to extend the technology to over 30 additional fulfillment and distribution centers across the U.S., with pilot deployments in grocery stores set for 2026.

The collaboration supports Amazon’s broader sustainability strategy, which includes reducing emissions in existing buildings through smart technologies and using low-carbon materials in new construction. It also contributes to Amazon’s goal of reaching net-zero carbon by 2040 under The Climate Pledge.

“Initiatives like this demonstrate how sustainable solutions can drive strong returns while benefiting the planet,” said Riaz Raihan, Senior Vice President and Chief Digital Officer at Trane Technologies. “Together, we’re not only transforming these fulfillment centers but also driving meaningful progress towards Amazon’s business objectives and bold sustainability goals.”

The project builds on BrainBox AI’s participation in the 2024 Amazon Sustainability Accelerator Climate Tech Pilot, where it was selected as one of eleven start-ups to test climate-focused solutions within Amazon’s operations. BrainBox AI used AWS technologies—including Amazon S3 and Amazon Bedrock—to integrate AI-driven optimization across the selected sites.

“By working with Trane Technologies and the BrainBox AI team, we’re turning our buildings into intelligent systems that learn and adapt,” said Christina Minardi, Vice President of Worldwide Grocery Stores Real Estate and Store Development at Amazon.
