UK Government Highlights S2Cool Cooling Project Backed by IOR

The UK Government has recognised the S2Cool project, supported by the Institute of Refrigeration (IOR), as a case study in its International Education Strategy under the theme “Championing the UK as a Global Leader in Research, Science and Technology”.

S2Cool is led by Northumbria University and involves collaboration between six UK universities and six Pakistani institutions. The initiative focuses on developing a compressor-less, energy-efficient cooling system designed to reduce energy use by up to 65%, eliminate harmful refrigerants, and function effectively in off-grid and low-income settings.

The project addresses the growing challenges of extreme heat and rising energy demand, especially in vulnerable regions. It is supported by over 15 partners from industry, policy, and non-governmental organisations.

Professor Muhammad Wakil Shahzad, Principal Investigator and lead of the S2Cool project, commented: “We are proud to be working with IOR as a key strategic partner in the S2Cool project. Their expertise in capacity building and advisory support is strengthening our talent pipeline, accelerating knowledge exchange, and enabling the rapid translation of sustainable cooling innovations into real-world, scalable impact.”

The strategy is available for download here.
