The 8th Issue of the OzonAction Scoop by UNEP (
October 2024) highlights significant progress under the Montreal Protocol and Kigali Amendment in ozone protection, climate action, and health preservation. Since its inception, the Montreal Protocol has been critical in reducing ozone-depleting substances (ODS) like CFCs, which have severe impacts on human health, such as increased rates of skin cancer and eye cataracts. A recent U.S. study found that, by protecting the ozone layer, the protocol is expected to prevent millions of skin cancer cases and cataracts.
The Kigali Amendment also focuses on phasing down hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), powerful greenhouse gases used in refrigeration and air conditioning. This amendment could prevent up to 0.5°C of global warming by 2100. UNEP emphasizes sustainable solutions in the refrigeration sector, like natural refrigerants and low-GWP alternatives, despite challenges such as flammability and toxicity.
UNEP's report underscores the importance of cold chain sustainability to secure food safety, healthcare access, and climate resilience. This initiative is crucial as global warming intensifies, particularly in vulnerable regions, necessitating efficient refrigeration systems.
The newsletter advocates for continued innovation, policy updates, and educational efforts to mitigate health and environmental risks posed by ODS and HFCs, ensuring a sustainable and healthier future.
