Energy consumption for space cooling in EU households reached 80.4 thousand TJ (approximately 76.2 trillion BTU) in 2024, double the 40.5 thousand TJ (approximately 38.4 trillion BTU) recorded in 2018. Air conditioning is playing a larger role as people cope with hotter days.
Consumption increased each year between 2018 and 2024, except in 2020 and 2023. Energy use fell by 2.5% in 2020 compared with the previous year and by 1.9% in 2023.
Italy recorded the highest total household energy use for space cooling at 26.3 thousand TJ (approximately 24.9 trillion BTU). Spain followed with 14.3 thousand TJ (approximately 13.6 trillion BTU), while Greece used 11.9 thousand TJ (approximately 11.3 trillion BTU).
Cyprus and Malta had the highest shares of space cooling in final household energy consumption, at 16.0% and 15.0%, respectively. The share was 7.4% in Greece, 2.5% in Spain and 2.3% in Italy.
