The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has released its biennial report on the country's refrigerated warehouse capacity for the year 2023.
Refrigerated Warehouses Capacity 3.70 Billion Cubic Feet
Gross refrigerated storage capacity in the United States totaled 3.70 billion cubic feet on October 1, 2023. This was the 53rd biennial survey of refrigerated warehouses. The five States with the largest gross warehouse capacity (million cubic feet) were: California 370, Washington 294, Wisconsin 290, Texas 262 and Florida 236.
Usable refrigerated storage capacity was 2.99 billion cubic feet, or 81 percent of the gross space. Usable freezer space was 80 percent of the usable refrigerated space with the remaining 20 percent used as cooler space.
Public warehouse refrigerated storage capacity totaled 2.51 billion gross cubic feet in 2023, accounting for 68 percent of the total storage.
Private and semiprivate warehouse refrigerated capacity totaled 1.18 billion gross cubic feet, or 32 percent of the gross refrigerated space.
Refrigerated warehouse numbers totaled 900 in 2023. The number of public warehouses is 492. Private and semiprivate warehouses totaled 408.
